This is nice. It's a DeArmond Tremolo Control from about 1950 which makes it a very early effects box. Apparently there are no transistors in the box, it's all mechanical.
There's a advert for a at the Carvin Museum in which it states 'it is possible to effect a beautiful tremolo with the accordion, harmonica, etc.'
Dan Formosa has a great site which explains exactly how these work and how they can be restored.
