These days keyboard players just don't seem to be as cool as they once were.
Back in the 50s and 60s every band and record seemed to feature some great player playing some great instruments. Just think of all the classic rock and pop records from that period that owe their popularity in part to the keyboard.
Then somewhere along the line keyboards and keyboard players became less cool. Of course keyboards are still widely used in popular music, it just seems that the coolness has gone.
I've been doing some research on this subject and believe I have pinpointed the exact moment at which keyboard players lost their cool image and became thought of as the geeky member of the band.
Watch and weep...

Keyboard became identikit monlithic slabs of black plastic perched on USS stands.
Keyboard players kinda went the same way.
Shame, really. But it's a lot easier to move your gear around
